On Top of Stone Mountain

Took me 24 minutes and I did it without stopping. I'm pretty pleased.
Sure beats my attempts from a few months back. I guess walking daily (or
as close to it as I can get) pays off.

Here's How

A few weeks ago I was picking some stuff up from my dad and he had run across a really nifty book that probably came from my grandmother Hazel Ripley (Seals). It's a cocktail book called Here's How, Mixed Drinks, by W.C. Whitfield and decorated by Tad Shell.

It has a cool wooden cover imprinted with the title and picture and is bound by a leather lace. The three gents in font of the cauldron are now doubt mixing up something devilish.

It was publish by Three Mountaineers in Asheville, NC. Evidently they made it until about 1992. The name may still be owned by someone. I haven't found much other info.

1941. Everyone probably needed a drink.

I looked up the Sazerac and they call for vermouth. That's a new one on me. I guess they're using it as a form of bitters. I'll have to give it a try.

Edit:
Ugh. They left out the sugar or simple syrup too. That doesn't work so well... did that once by accident.

Hot Nuts

I found some Cajun Creole Hot Nuts at Publix lately. They are insanely hot.

Highly recommended.

Disconnected

As if phone, email, IM, SMS, and this blog weren't enough I've been playing with Twitter more recently. I've discovered it's a great canvas for just making stuff up. Today Sam got me messing with Jott. It can tie in to just about anything. Now I can call Jott on my phone and make stuff up for it to post on Twitter. Jott's pretty neat and has a lot of potential for reminders and such. If you like to talk on the phone, check it out. I still use Sandy for reminders. I like how I can just send her and email and let her sort it all out.

Evernote's out now too. I messed with it a while back and it's a pretty cool glorified super-clipboard. I'd never pay for something like that but I'd never use it enough to need to go on to the paying level.

Now I just need to figure out how to tie it all in to GrandCentral.

Maybe I just need a new iPhone.

Don't Touch!

I've always wondered what to do when I ran across some blasting caps.

Now I know.

Coco Sighting

Today I took Dad out to a late Father's Day lunch at Bangkok Thyme. I ran across Coco with one of the Refuel oil collection trucks between there and Food 101.

Here he is talking to Zach outside The New York Butcher Shoppe.

Doing Better...

I finally made it around the rock this morning without stopping, collapsing, or feeling like someone was standing on my chest. I set an alarm so I could get in there before the Sun was all cranked up and the temps go sky-high. I set a fairly decent pace starting out with Claude Larson's album High Tech and then completed the circle with Surfpatrouille's album Instronaut (Hmm... maybe my employer is getting to me.)

My WrightSocks have not failed me and I highly recommend them.

66,000 lbs.

Seems about right to me.

Quarry at Stone Mountain

Evidently the rock here used to be a bit higher. Granite from Stone
Mountain has been used in government buildings all over the southeast
and then some.

They have a nice little exhibit showing the process too.

Sazerac

I've been reading a lot about the sazerac cocktail lately so today I decided I'd make one.

Based on the recipe I read on The Gumbo Pages I assembled all the necessary stuff:
I didn't add a drop of Angostura bitters... perhaps I'll try that next time.

The taste of the Absente is very subtle as there's only enough to coat the glass, but you can still tell it's there from the faint hints of anise. The Peychaud's adds all sorts of other flavors to the rye but it's balanced out by the sweetness of the simple syrup. The lemon peel twisted above the drink and rubbed on the rim of the glass seems to add a lot more in the olfactory sense than it does to the taste buds. Overall it's a nice sippin' drink.

I'll have to try a sazerac in New Orleans some time and see if I did it right.
